Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is one of the most famous historical sites in Sri Lanka. It is located in the central part of the country and rises nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. Sigiriya was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, who made it his royal palace.

The fortress is well known for its advanced architecture and beautiful design. At the base of the rock, there are well-planned gardens, pools, and pathways that show the skill of ancient engineers. Halfway up the rock, visitors can see the famous frescoes—paintings of beautiful women that are still bright and colorful today. There is also a polished wall called the Mirror Wall, which once reflected the king as he walked by.

At the top of Sigiriya are the ruins of the royal palace. From there, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding forests and villages. The entrance to the rock is shaped like a giant lion, and only its huge paws remain today, giving the site its name, Lion Rock.

Sigiriya is not only a symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich history but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It attracts thousands of tourists every year and remains an important cultural and historical treasure of the country.
